Al served as a vice-president of the ASU from 2000-2002, responsible for the area of promotion, and, a member of the executive board. Prior to that Al had served the sport for years on a national level as a member of various committees and task forces in a number of key areas laying the groundwork for initiatives in growth and development, publicity and promotion, and publications. Al was always someone you could count on not only for great ideas, but also to dig in and get his hands dirty with the actual work and implementation. He could also be counted on for his vision, integrity, and people skills. Al stood up for the interests of all members new and veteran, and, the grassroots skaters and volunteers, throughout the merger process which culminated in the combination of the ASU and US speedskating in 2002.
Al was also instrumental in reforming the Connecticut Speedskating Asssociation back in 1994. He served as secretary/treasurer until 2004. He was a moving force in the state and nationally in the development of the sport of speed skating.
